Treasury Department office fines Spirit Airlines for violating
restrictions on trade with Cuba
MIRAMAR, Fla. (AP) -- Discount carrier Spirit Airlines has been fined
$100,000 for violating U.S. restrictions on trade with Cuba.
According to the Office of Foreign Assets Control, the carrier
transferred funds to the Cuban government for flying in its airspace,
but did not have the proper license to do so.
The transactions took place between September 2004 and March 2007,
according to the office, which is part of the Treasury Department.
Spirit, which is privately owned, flies to 36 cities in the U.S., Latin
America and the Caribbean. A message left after-hours with a company
spokeswoman was not immediately returned.
