Las Villas, Cuba – www.PayoLibre.com – Members of the Democracy Movement
in Manicaragua gathered today, October 12th, to pay special tribute to
the 5 Cubans who on October 12, 1960 were killed before a firing squad
for revolting in the Escambray Mountains against the communist regime
which had started to make its presence in the island of Cuba.
The brave men had been tried that same day in Santa Clara by a
revolutionary tribunal headed by Lieutenant Claudio M. López Cardet, who
at night during the trial had asked those present to continue the trial
on the next day, however that same night Silesio Walsh, Plinio Prieto,
Porfirio Ramírez, José Palomino and Ángel Rodríguez were taken to La
Campana, a place close to Manicaragua and there the improvised firing
squad conducted the execution.
This special tribute was held for men who became victims of summary
executions.
At the tribute, passages from the Bible were read, prayers for the
innocent were offered and an exposition was held regarding the facts
relating to the very painful and bitter history of the Escambray. At the
conclusion of the tribute, a reference was made to the last words of
Plinio Prieto before dying, which he spoke to the priest who offered him
religious assistance: I HAVE FAITH IN GOD AND IN MEN.
