THE TRUTH ABOUT CUBA
by Mario J Torres
Have you ever felt prisoner in your own land? Have you felt repression on
your own skin?. The Truth about Cuba will lead you through unknown paths to
you and it will make you think how people may feel when all their rights are
incredibly violated day by day and how the first needs of the whole
population are totally denied as if sentenced to a massive punishment. This
paperback book is written in English and Spanish and it describes all the
misfortunes the Cuban people are undergoing now under Castro’s regime. It
has 12 chapters with 214 pages and also contains 20 poems on Cuban-related
issues also written in both languages.
Besides, it reflects in its pages the nostalgia of a lost generation in
exile and the desire of those in the island to join them as well as features
of the Cuban culture with everyone’s hope for a better life.
It portraits the sufferings undergone for rafters crossing the sea to escape
from the system and also the pain and unhappiness of those inside the island
as well as the depression of the ones that manage to escape from that awful
system and cross the sea but still long for their homeland:
“ ...Attempting to request for a share of Paradise, dances my piece of wood,
which opened a little hole on the cursed wall on mountains of forbidden and
furious water that whip me as if sacrifice were not enough, as if allied to
my enemy....“
Poem RAFT, Page 67. English version.
...and describes the situation in the different spheres of the life of the
country in a testimony in which peace, forgiveness and liberty are
unreachable sins and tries to condemn, at the same time, the injustice the
Cuban people are going through and intends to make public the real living
conditions existing in the Caribbean country.
“...Castro denied God and forbade Christmas, so believers had to hide their
religion; otherwise they were cornered or discriminated, and many people
really forgot about God in order to get positions in the Government...”
Chapter 8: “Sports, Religion and Elections” Page. 64 English version.
The author, Mario J Torres, worked for Jefferson County Public Schools in
Louisville, Kentucky teaching Spanish at I. N. Bloom Elementary, ESL to
adults at J-town High School and Spanish GED to hispanic adults at Southern
High until June 2003 and he himself underwent many of the miseries he
describes in his book
He has lived in the US for six years and he decided to write his book seeing
the lack of information American people have on the island and some
misconceptions on the figure of its dictator; thus intending to unveil the
myth and mystery that have surrounded the island for 45 years of hopeless
desires of freedom and welfare.
Mr. Torres now works at Henry Filer Middle School in Hialeah, Miami, Florida
where he teaches English to hispanic students.
