The Miami Mafia
I was taught that all my life and I
grew listening to it, born under skies governed by a single word which could
not have any discussion. Everything bad came from the north, the revolted
and brutal north, that of the monster, forcing the apostle's words to be at
the service of what was most convenient for the system and taking their
desired meaning for brain washing. When something of North American origin
was praised, two things needed to be said or else you would sin: these
yankees are real mean and evil but they are smart . There was nothing good
coming from Washington's homeland and a careful selection for public
exposure of the most terrible news was made whereas the country's
achievements, its advanced technology and high standard of living were
purposedly hidden. On the contrary, everything from the brotherly socialist
field and the uninterested help of the glorious Soviet Union had to be
worshipped in an altar as a religion and their multiple failures, dirty
policy, intrigue and repression were concealed behind hollow slogans, never
ending speeches and nonsense parades. All this was "under the table" since
the people soon understood this game and designated the equivalent of yuma
to the "evil" of the Yankees and that of bolo to Russian "progress", always
wishing in silence to be "exploited" by the former rather than living a
whole life painted red. The spaceship circumvallations around planet Earth
made by the Russians were more important than the Americans' manned trip to
the moon and The Beatles were heard almost in the 70's and with utmost
caution because they did not belong to the beloved socialist field.
The awful Russian movies and their horrible electronic appliances had to be
honored and praised like reciting a poem by heart as well as the ideological
deviation implied by the northern neighbor influence had to be strongly
criticized and condemned although the chief of the revolution, years later,
when feeling betrayed by his Russian friends and in another one of his
changes of mind, recognized that "all the things coming from those countries
were good for nothing", legalizing this opinion so that others could freely
repeat it, still hating the "Yankees" more than ever but trying to live on
them. Amidst all this circus, the top expression of an ill society was and
is now more than ever the wicked Miami maffia where the devil dwells, all
the plans against the system are devised, the guilty one for the situation
in the island, where lies against the noble revolution arise, which is
inhabited by poisonous snakes, terrorists and people without principles sold
and exploited by the imperialist master, who hate good causes and wish the
destruction of the homeland. Life gave me the opportunity, after many turns
and whimful journeys, of being able to live in that city of evil and what I
really found, as neutral witness, was thousands of Cubans full of
nolstalgia, taken away from their properties, habits, traditions, language,
with split families and many of them feeling in total banishment or
breathing island air in the distance or trying to rebuild a new homeland
similar to the one they lost. People who look prosperous and fortunate but
who inside are frustrated, unhappy, in disgrace, artificial and
homeland-orphan. Persons with deep wounds of prison, torture and with the
pain of dead or disappeared relatives. Retired old people, usual visitors of
the Versailles restaurant, who only want to fix the world in a barber shop
style. A huge mess of contradictory opinions that show a failure of decades.
Helpless politicians in complete division of criteria, with their hands tied
without knowing what to do to overthrow the real gangster, being only able
to caress this idea in radio or TV shows or in the newspaper as a sort of
theater play or entertainment, merely to let off their steam, to let time
pass and see what happens or to plan what they will do when the dictator
falls but without having the slightest idea of how to overthrow him or as
people say in Cuba: waiting for somebody else to kill him. And it is indeed
true that the task of extirpating the tumor is not easy but have anyone ever
seen throughout history such a helpless, unhappy, defenseless, useless,
long-suffering and resigned maffia?
