Review: Zapata Tamayo was arrested for the last time in March
2003, during the Fidel Castro regime’s repressive crackdown of human
rights activists in Cuba. Zapata Tamayo had been arrested several times
before. In one instance Zapata Tamayo was arrested while he participated
in a hunger strike organized by the Assembly to Promote a Civil Society
taking place in Martha Beatriz Roque Cabello’s house. The event’s
purpose was to demand freedom for Dr. Oscar Elías Biscet and all the
Cuban political prisoners.
On another occasion Zapata Tamayo was arrested and charged with
possession of ‘anti-government signs’ with the intent to solidarize with
Cuban political prisoners.
On February 20, 2004 Zapata Tamayo’s mother said that he had been
transferred and his location was unknown. This information was made
available outside Cuba by other political prisoners.
Zapata Tamayo is also awaiting trial on other charges which are dubious
at best.
Amnesty International considers Zapata Tamayo a prisoner of conscience
and according to reports “on 20 October 2003 he was dragged along the
floor of Combinado del Este Prison by prison officials after requesting
medical attention, leaving his back full of lacerations.” Amnesty
