Review: Omar Ruíz Hernández comes from a religious family. His
father was a pastor and Omar was also formally studying theology. Omar
Ruíz Hernández reported on the Castro’s regime practices through the
Centro-Norte Press Agency and later the Grupo de Trabajo Decoro. He
participated in opposition groups such as Comisión de Derechos Humanos
(Human Rights Commission) and the Partido Solidaridad Democrática
(Democratic Solidarity Party). In one of his letters from prison Omar
Ruíz Hernández tells his wife “I am convinced my time in prison is not
due to the man who governs the lives of 11 million persons, but to God
who wanted me to live through this;- and I humbly accept it.” In the
same letter Omar gives us a glimpse of his strong beliefs –“ I was
conscious of what my actions could bring, that is why I have been able
to endure it with stoicism.”
