In November of 2004, Aguiar Ramírez’s wife denounced the physical abuse her husband has to endured in prison at the hands of the authorities because he demands medical attention. Aguiar Ramírez suffers from several illnesses including hypertension, a deficient heart, diabetes and prostate abnomalities. Recently, Aguiar Ramírez authored a poem entitled Damas de Blanco which features his wife. Amnesty Internacional has declared Nelson Aguiar Ramírez a prisoner of conscience.
