Review: In 1990 Broche Espinosa was fired from his job in the
restaurant industry because the government backed labor union considered
he was not trustworthy enough. In 1991 Broche Espinosa declared himself
a member of the opposition and denounces Cuba’s human rights violations.
He was arrested and sent to the Nieves Morejón prison in 1992, where he
spent a few months. After leaving prison Broche Espinosa continued his
denouncements and was severely punished by the Cuban political police.
Along with others in his organization, Broche Espinosa continued to
speak out on the condition of the balseros (persons who attempt to leave
the island in home-made rafts that are not seaworthy) who are returned
by the United States to Cuba in accordance with a inmigration treaty
between the two countries. Broche Espinosa was also a member of the
Comité Gestor de Ciudadanos del Proyecto Varela in Cuba’s central
region.
Broche Espinosa recently suffered a heart attack and remains in delicate
condition in prison.
