Review: As an independent librarian, Valdés Guevara endeavors to
break the Cuban government’s systemic censorship over the Cuban people.
One of the charges levied against Valdés Guevara by the state was that
he had founded an independent library with the intent to subvert the
central government’s ideology. For the Cuban communist regime, the idea
that one of its citizens may posses or have access to literary works
that do not concord with the official central party’s ideology
constitute a felony; in Valdés Guevara’s case the sentence for such a
‘felony’ is 20 years.
Valdés Guevara’s health is delicate. He has severe renal failure and was
once taken to a hospital in Havana to undergo dialysis treatment. His
wife is constantly reminding the authorities and the World the need
Valdés Guevara has to undergo dialysis treatments on a regular basis in
order to address his health deficiencies.
Valdés Guevara’s case has been denounced by various international
journalists organizations and the systematic abused on the part of the
Cuban government towards independent journalists and librarians has been
exposed throughout the international media.
