Review: Diaz Echemendia is a member of the Pedro Luis Boitell
organization. The organization was founded by Cuban political prisoners
and has achieved a high level of respect among the Cuban people and
internationally.
Diaz Echemendia was arrested on August 9, 1990 and accused of the above
mentioned ‘crimes’. In September 1997 at the Combinado de Guantanamo
Prison, over 30 prison guards kicked and punched Diaz Echemendia, Jorge
Luis García Pérez and Nestor Rodríguez Lobaina while they were
handcuffed.
Amnesty
International expressed its concern in a report dated December 8,
1997 (AI INDEX: AMR 25/044/1997) ,- “according to reports, political
prisoners Jorge Luis García Pérez (nicknamed "Antúnez"), Nestor
Rodríguez Lobaina and Francisco Herodes Díaz Echemendía, were
ill-treated in Combinado de Guantánamo Prison, Guantánamo Province, in
September 1997. (Amnesty International) is also concerned that they were
being, and may still be, held in conditions that amount to cruel,
inhuman and degrading treatment or punishment.”
In accordance, Amnesty International called for the Cuban government to
ensured that:
· An independent and impartial inquiry be conducted.
· Responsible individuals be suspended and brought to justice.
· Political prisoners be provided with access to medical attention.
To this date Amnesty International’s requests have not been granted by
Castro’s tyrannical regime and Diaz Echemendia, Antúnez and Rodriguez
Lobaina continue to be punished and treated in a cruel, inhuman and
degrading manner.
· Review authored by ‘Proyecto Rostros del Presidio’ using diverse
sources.
