Review: Arturo Suarez Ramos was born and raised in communist Cuba.
Notwithstanding the government’s constant indoctrination campaign,
Arturo rejected the communist doctrine early in his life. He manifested
his opposition by placing anti-government messages in public places
where all could read them. He was arrested in 1984 and served 2 months.
Suarez Ramos was again arrested in 1985, charged with trying to leave
Cuba illegally. He is sentenced to 18 months and declared to be a
‘danger to society’ by the governmental authorities.
In 1987, Suarez Ramos, along with two other persons, attempted to divert
an cuban national flight to the United States.
He was arrested on 10-3-87 and in a mock trial sentenced to death by
firing squad. Only because the sentence ignited an international
outrage, was his sentence commuted to 30 years in prison. In his stay at
the Combinado del Este, Suarez Ramos joins the Comité Cubano Pro
Derechos Humanos.
In 1992, Suarez Ramos is returned to the Villa Marista prison. He is
charged with collaborating in a presumed prison revolt. Also involved in
this case was Sebastián Arcos Bernes.
Suarez Ramos was physically punished for months until he was moved to
the Kilo 7 prison in Camagüey.
Having served 16 years of his sentence make Arturo Suarez Ramos,- Cuba’s
longest serving political prisoner.
Throughout his imprisonment, Arturo Suarez Ramos has worked for human
rights and has gone on hunger strikes to call attention to the inhumane
conditions in which political prisoners live.
