Jorge Luis García Pérez (Antúnez) |
|
Jorge Luis García Pérez, better known as “Antúnez”, is from Placetas in
the province of Villa Clara. He was jailed in 1990 accused of “Oral
Propaganda to the Enemy” and sentenced to 15 years in prison.
He has been confined to punishment cells on many occasions,
participating in many hunger strikes to protest the abuse and the unfair
sentence, which have greatly damaged his health.
Jorge has received severe beatings, which have left surface cracks on
his bones; suffers from acute renal pains due to hypoglycemia, and has a
nodular lesion on a lung that almost cost him his life when he did not
receive proper medical attention. Just to be pre-admitted for this
ailment he was forced into a life-threatening hunger strike aided by his
sister, Bertha Antúnez Pernet and his companions at the entrance to the
Nieves Morejón prison; who have been trying to awaken the world’s
attention and interest to what is happening to him.
Antúnez, a young black man, has been humiliated and discriminated
against in the Castro jails because he in not in league with a regime
that brags about a supposed social equality that it does not really
support. He has been suffering for many years despite the many campaigns
on his behalf, which seem to fall on deaf ears.
While in the Red Ceramic prison in the province of Camagüey he was
attacked by dogs trained to kill, that were specifically turned loose on
him. He was also at the infamous Kilo-8 prison, also in Camagüey, where
he partook in many protests, along with other political prisoners
against the tortures and beatings that the prisoners receive. He was
also involved in trying to maintain constant communications with other
prisons.
Antúnez was also a guest at the maximum-security Combinado del Este in
Havana province, where he continued to denounce the violations of human
rights being perpetrated against all prisoners. He was then sent to
Ariza prison in the city of Cienfuegos, where he daily claims for proper
medical care and humane treatment for himself and for his unfortunate
companions, starting another hunger strike that could easily worsen his
already diminished health.
His integrity and courage in facing the adversary conditions of
political prison, and his constant denouncing of those conditions, have
branded him as an opposition of great magnitude who has earned the
respect and love of all those who have shared the horrors of the unfair
and repressive political prison in his country.
