FROM CUBA

Statement of the Municipalities of Cuba and Human Rights

HAVANA, CUBA - March 4 (Pedro Moises Calderi Tapanes, MDCDH / Puenteinfocubamiami.org) –In an effort to find a solution to the plight of the country, members of the Municipalities of Cuba and Human Rights fully support the “ Proposal for a National Salvation” and hereby make public our support.

Those of us who in our hearts harbored hope of improvement when Dictator Fidel Castro resign from power, were incredibly disappointed with the selection of our Nation’s New Council of State.

Furthermore, we consider the selection of Mr. Machado Ventura as First Deputy Minister of the Council of State in itself, a continuation of the totalitarian regime, excluding all avenues to a democratic transition in our homeland and Raul Castro’s speech served to clarify that any future change would be confined to the structures of the “status quo”.

Apparently, for those in power, fifty years of rule is not enough and the trail of destruction and suffering the Castro brothers have imposed on the Cuban people is not enough.

Faced with this grim reality, the groups of the opposition are obliged to unite, listen and negotiate amongst ourselves. Maybe, together we might find an alternative that will change the course of our Nation’s destiny.

Havana, February 26, 2008

President of the Municipalities of Cuba and Human Rights
