Colombian police:
Rebels sent Chávez money
Posted on Mon, Mar. 03, 2008
BOGOTA, Colombia -- (AP) -- Colombia's police chief says documents
recovered from the computer of a rebel leader killed in Ecuador reveal
that the guerrillas sent money to Hugo Chávez when he was a jailed coup
leader before being elected Venezuela's president.
Gen. Oscar Naranjo said Monday that the files were recovered from a
laptop owned by the rebel known as Raul Reyes, who was killed Saturday
in an operation by Colombian commandos and air force planes just over
the border in Ecuador.
''A note recovered from Raul Reyes speaks of how grateful Chavez was for
the 100 million pesos that the FARC delivered to Chávez when he was in
prison,'' Naranjo told a news conference.
Chávez was jailed from 1992 to 1994 for his role in a failed coup.
