FROM CUBAN LIBERTY COUNCIL
Letter to The Honorable
President of the United States George W. Bush
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington DC 20500
Text of the letter:
Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, Vatican´s
Secretary of State, visited Cuba, marking the 10 th anniversary of Pope
John Paul II journey to Cuba, thus becoming the first international
visitor to meet with Raul Castro after Fidel Castro's resignation.
Among the topics discussed were the embargo, which he called "ethically
unacceptable", and US sanctions against the island's Communist regime
and also the possibility of an exchange of the "five Cuban prisoners" in
the United States for prisoners of conscience in Cuban jails.
Since you will be meeting with His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI on April
16, 2008, we would like to respectfully remind you that those five
spies, some serving live sentences in US prisons, were found guilty for
the murder of American citizens in international air space, as ordered
by Fidel and Raul Castro.
As Cuban Americans we regret that the Catholic Church has aligned itself
with the victimizers and not the victims. We support the policy of the
United States toward Cuba and feel that Cardinal Bertone's complacency
with Cuba's dictatorship may have sent a misleading message to the
Vatican.
We trust that the firmness of you convictions in maintaining sanctions
against a totalitarian regime will prevail in your meeting with His
Holiness Pope Benedict XVI.
