HAVANA

The Cuban opponent Oswaldo Payá, leader of the Christian Liberation Movement , with the acronym (MLC), denounced yesterday "massive torture"practices against dissidents in prisons in the Island and asks the International Community to join in the petitions for Amnesty.

Payá expressed his concern for the "systematic cruelty applied" to "the prisoners of the Cuban Spring", the 75 dissidents sentenced in 2003, and further denounced " particular sadism in the actions of the prison authorities".

" The physical and psychological damage the prisoners suffer should not leave Cubans and the International Community in silence and insensible- pointed out Payá in a press release from Havana.

Payá denounced the case of José Daniel Ferrer García, also a member of the (MLC), sentenced to 25 years; the case of Juan Carlos Herrera Acosta, a political prisoner, both of whom were beaten by several guards of the prison Kilo 8, in Camaguey, after enduring several days of persecution and humiliation.

He also denounced the case of Luis Enrique Ferrer García, a provincial leader of the Christian Liberation Movement, sentenced to 28 years who is being harassed by common prisoners in the prison in Santa Clara.

In the case of Regis Iglesias, leader of the MLC and of the Varela Project, sentenced to 18 years, has been receiving death threats and is also a victim of provocations and offenses.
