Payá denounces
"massive tortures" against imprisoned dissidents.

The Cuban opponent Oswaldo Payá, leader of the Christian Liberation
Movement , with the acronym (MLC), denounced yesterday "massive
torture"practices against dissidents in prisons in the Island and asks
the International Community to join in the petitions for Amnesty.
Payá expressed his concern for the "systematic cruelty applied" to "the
prisoners of the Cuban Spring", the 75 dissidents sentenced in 2003, and
further denounced " particular sadism in the actions of the prison
authorities".
" The physical and psychological damage the prisoners suffer should not
leave Cubans and the International Community in silence and insensible-
pointed out Payá in a press release from Havana.
Payá denounced the case of José Daniel Ferrer García, also a member of
the (MLC), sentenced to 25 years; the case of Juan Carlos Herrera
Acosta, a political prisoner, both of whom were beaten by several guards
of the prison Kilo 8, in Camaguey, after enduring several days of
persecution and humiliation.
He also denounced the case of Luis Enrique Ferrer García, a provincial
leader of the Christian Liberation Movement, sentenced to 28 years who
is being harassed by common prisoners in the prison in Santa Clara.
In the case of Regis Iglesias, leader of the MLC and of the Varela
Project, sentenced to 18 years, has been receiving death threats and is
also a victim of provocations and offenses.
