(December 5, 2003/MIAMI, FL) - Florida Republican Senate candidate Larry
Klayman today called for the removal of U.S. District Judge James
Lawrence King in the case of six Cubans facing charges of air piracy in
connection with their flight to freedom from Cuban dictator Fidel
Castro’s murderous regime.
“Judge King’s decision to exclude evidence of Hitleresque political and
social repression in Cuba turn the case upside down,” said Klayman. “It
doesn’t make sense that we should use taxpayer’s money for prosecutorial
purposes against people fleeing a communist country,” added Klayman.
“Prosecutors and courts must exercise reasonable discretion in deciding
who to prosecute.”
“The U.S. Attorney’s decision to prosecute and King’s compliant rulings
show both the pressing need for judicial reform and the urgent necessity
for implementing U.S. policy that favors those Cubans fleeing to our
country rather than penalizing them for desiring the same freedoms that
we enjoy,” said Klayman. “All of Judge King’s decisions on this matter
to date favor Fidel Castro and his reign of terror, torture, and murder.
Returning these refugees is like sending back escapees to concentration
camps.”
Klayman, a longtime advocate for legal and judicial reform, boasts an
impeccable record of activism in favor of the Cuban community. In
addition to his recent pledge to help overturn the unconstitutional “wet
foot, dry foot” immigration law, Klayman won by default against Cuban
dictator Fidel Castro in Federal Court in connection with the shooting
down of two Brothers to the Rescue airplanes by Cuban MiG-29 jet
fighters; led private diplomatic missions to Europe in an effort in
intensify sanctions against the communist Cuban regime; proved that
former Attorney General Janet Reno had obstructed justice in the Elian
Gonzalez case; and won a lawsuit filed on behalf of INS agent Rick
Ramirez which in effected halted anti-Cuban bias at the agency.
Klayman has promised to continue to fight for, and serve as a voice for
the Cuban community when elected as a U.S. Senator. Klayman, the only
Republican candidate from South Florida, lives in Miami and loves the
Cuban community and its culture.
