Félix Humberto Rivero Castañeda

Félix Humberto Rivero Castañeda who lives in Canadá obtained a Visa to visit his mother who lives in Havana. He arrives at José Martí Airport on May 13, 2000 around 7 p.m. At the airport were his brother and his sister-in-law waiting to greet him, but three hours after the Lacsa flight from Canada had arrived his relatives were informed that Mr. Rivero had probably not taken that flight. Hours later, Felix Humberto's wife confirmed through a long distance telephone call that he had indeed left for Cuba on that flight.

Félix's brother insisted at the airport for an explanation as to what was happening. After a long wait he was informed that Félix had been detained by Immigration and had been taken to 20 and 3rd Streets in Miramar.

The family, desperate by then, went to that address around 1:30 a.m. the officer who received them told the family, categorically, that you can't see him due to orders from the high command.

Sunday May 14th, was mother's day and Hortensia Castañeda Rodríguez, 80 years old, was determined to see her son, Félix Humberto. She arrived at the placed where her son was detained and cried and implored until 12 p.m. when they allowed her to see her son for about an hour and a half and in front of an officer from the Ministry of the Interior.

During the conversation the officer asked Félix Humberto: Do you know why you have been detained here?; To which he responded;. Then the officer replied: We don't know either;

That same Sunday, May 14th at night in another Lacsa flight, Félix Humberto was returned to Canadá. Even though he had paid $95.00 (ninety five Canadian Dollars) for the Visa which would give him entry in his birth country, he was informed hat his money would not be returned, since the visa did not assure entry into the country, that it was immigration who could reserve the right to let him in or not.

He also had to pay for his stay at 20 and 3rd in Miramar plus his food. He was not even allowed to give his mother the medications he was bringing her.

THIS IS THE PRICE THAT MUST BE PAID FOR BEING THE BROTHER OR INDEPENDENT JOURNALIST RAUL RIVERO.
